The Purpose of Your Leadership

In my own role on the management front lines of one of the toughest union environments in Canada, I discovered that doing the most difficult things (like sitting with hardened union types for a disciplinary conversation) was much more effective and personally satisfying when done with compassion and empathy.

Leadership can be divided into two categories: Ego-driven and enlightened.

Their difference does not lie in how they look, nor their job title, nor even what they do.

They have a different purpose.

Ego-driven leaders have a largely “me” focus… fulfilling their own needs and wants.

Enlightened leaders have an in-the-bones “we” focus.
